19th MARCH
Hereby follows the report of the league match (1st league) between Fish Hoek and Radloff played at Radloff

First up it was the no 4’s between Saul of Fish Hoek and Mikhail of Radloff. From the beginning you could see Saul was the sharper of the two. Mikhail fought well but hard rallies all seemed to go Saul’s way and in the end he achieved a comfortable 3-0 win.

Next up was Mr. Castle against Ed Dibden. Richie with all his finesse, touch, ”fitness” and accuracy proved to be strong on the night. Edmund played really well and hit the ball so crisply the whole night and made it very tough for Rich. But Rich dug deep and took a 3-0 win for the night.

No2’s saw Andreas of Radloff take on Johnny of Fish Hoek. What a hum digger of a match!! Andreas took the first game and Johnny the second. Andreas went up 10-3 in the third but unbelievably Johnny used all his experience and came back to take the game! Andreas dug deep and although he faced match point down in the fourth kept calm and fetched well with some real quality squash. He took the fourth and had too much legs in the fifth for Johnny. A hard fought 3-2 win for Radloff and Andreas.

The stage was set for a legend in SA Squash to get on court viz. Rodney Durbach. He was up against Francois le Roux of Radloff. Rod showed his class from the word go. The whole match was played at a frenetic pace and quality squash was dominated by Rodney. Francois fought hard and showed character in the 3rd to lose it narrowly, but in the end Rodney was just too good on the night and took a 3-0 win.

I.e. Fish Hoek beats Radloff 10-6

This was followed by awesome steak served by Radloff which ended a quality night

2) VOB A took to the courts against our neighbourly rivals WPCC A last night and as usual it was a challenging affair.

Our number 4's went on first. Grant "Tommy Gun" Greyling vs the up and coming youngster Murray Commins. This turned out to be a titanic battle of youth and flair vs grit and hard graft. Murray took the first two games in stylish fashion, hitting many a winner from seemingly awkward positions. Grant managed to make those game exceptionally hard and it bore dividends leading into the third. Grant opting to grind the third game and taking it in the end. Murray started going for more and more shots while unfortunately hitting the tin. Grant took the 4th in another hard fought game. The 5th was much of the same and Grant managed to take the match 3-2.

Our number ones went on next. Munro 'Diesel' Montanus vs Neil 'The Diamond' Oosthuizen. This was an exceptionally tough match even though the senior player made it look easy with a 3-0 win. Each game was filled with speed and accuracy and a fair amount of flair on Neil's part.
However the court conditions did not allow for flashy play as the ball kept alive and left you open to attack should you send a weak return. In the end it was Neil who could not take the sustained pressure from the VOB number one and lost out on the night. This making the fixture 2-0 in matches to VOB.

Next on court was Pierr 'Major' Roodt vs Christian 'Captain' Hansen. This was another titanic battle of will and guts with a few interesting court calls. Major having gone 2-0 down decided to show his fighting nerve as well as his physical strength. The match was gruelling and was an exceptionally physical affair. Captain finally taking the match in the fifth off a very tired drop from Major which clipped the tin.

Match standing at 2-1 to VOB with the final fixture between Eugene 'The Thinker' Petersen vs Mark 'Coach' Allen. In one of his last matches playing for WPCC, Mark showed why he is highly rated both as a coach and player, schooling Eugene on how to play tight clinical squash. Although both players were quite tired even after the first game which Mark took, they both pushed hard and played some very tactical squash. Mark took the match 3-0 which made it a points count which VOB lost narrowly lost!

Final Score VOB A  8     WPCC A  10

12th MARCH

Tuesday 12th March saw the opening of the Western Province 1st league for 2013.

WPCC B played Welgemoed A at Welgemoed. Ken no 4 playing for Welgemoed had vehicle problems and arrived late so the no 3’s Donald - WPCC and Luke - Welgemoed went on court earlier than scheduled or planned. Donald made the ultimate school boy error and went on court without a proper warm up and found himself 2-0 down without literally breaking a sweat. Donald managed to claw the 3rd game but the damage had already been done and Luke won 3/1.

Justin WPCC went on next against Ken and it was one way traffic for the youngster who demolished a “heavy legged Argus rider” 3/0.

Next up were the two giants of WP squash Thean Thorien – WPCC and Kobus  v/d Vyver - Welgemoed. Kobus played flawless squash and beat Thean 3/0.

Last but certainly not least were the two no 1’s Paul Atkinson (WPCC) and Rudi Willemse (WMD). Rudi displayed some exceptional ball striking throughout the match and went 2/0 up. But the experienced Paul was not ready to give up just yet. Through sheer determination he ground Rudi down and won the next 3 games – without a doubt, the match of the night.

Overall 8-7 +2 bonus points = 10-7 Welgemoed.

Welgemoed served up a great Lasagna for Dinner followed by a few drinks and laughs and a good night was had by all.
